Last summer, Tina and her family visited a primary school in a mountainous area of China. The educational institution was in a very poor condition; it lacked a proper teaching environment and education corresponding with other schools. During lunch, Tina discovered that many students were squatting on the ground, directly consuming the water flowing from the mountains. She immediately noticed an issue; the insanitary water may cause diseases, arousing my concern for this matter.
Following our visit, Tina and her sister Anni sought a course of action that provided access to purified drinking water for those children. After much brainstorming, they decided to organize an English summer camp to spread awareness concerning the living and learning conditions of the children from the rural areas. Not only did they offer a learning opportunity for the urban children, they were also able to raise funds to help schools solve this problem. Tina and Anni made a promotional page regarding the drinking water project, and contacted people around us, publicizing it among friends and the surrounding community to raise people’s attention.
The summer camp lasted for two weeks. Tina and Anni read with the children, corrected their pronunciation, conversed in English, shared our learning and living experiences with them, played games together, etc. At the same time, they were able to introduce the matter regarding the contaminated drinking water to the children and their parents.
Finally, at the end of the summer camp, Tina and Anni successfully raised the necessary funds for the construction of a well and donated them to that primary school. In about two months, the school built a water purification system; now, the children have access to safe drinking water.
